Embark on an adventure with the dance-makers of the future

Encouraging creativity and offering a platform to new voices in the world of dance: that is the aim of New Moves, the young choreographers’ programme initiated by artistic director Ted Brandsen in 2003. With New Moves, the dancers of Dutch National Ballet – and regularly young makers from outside the company as well – are challenged to explore their choreographic talents. Every year, this results in exciting surprises!

New Moves invites audiences to embark on an adventure with the dance-makers of the future. But also to see young dancers of the company at work in entirely different roles in their new creations – perhaps even in their first solo roles. And audiences are right at the heart of these choreographic and dance discoveries, as the performances of New Moves take place in Dutch National Opera & Ballet’s small theatre: Studio Boekman.

The need for innovation

By attending New Moves, you also contribute to the development of new talent. And that is important, as Ted Brandsen emphasises: “I strongly believe in the power of creativity and in the need for our art form to constantly reinvent itself. We must invest time, energy and resources in encouraging young choreographers.”

From promising talent to internationally celebrated artist

By now, New Moves has produced an entirely new generation of dance-makers, including Juanjo Arqués, Peter Leung, Ernst Meisner, Milena Sidorova and Remi Wörtmeyer. But Ted Brandsen himself, as well as other internationally celebrated choreographers such as David Dawson and Krzysztof Pastor, also created their first ballets for the – then still occasional – young choreographers’ programmes organised by Dutch National Ballet from the 1970s onwards, as the first dance company in the Netherlands to do so.
