Dutch National Opera & Ballet present
ILLUSION, ABSURDITY AND RITUALS
NDT 1 presents Parade which is solely dedicated to the work of associate choreographer Crystal Pite. For this full-length programme, NDT 1 is dancing a new version of Pite’s eclectic masterpiece Parade (2013) and her latest work The Statement (2016), which was created especially for NDT.
De Volkskrant wrote about the work: “The quartet has everything to make it a dance classic; a modern successor to the historic Green Table by Kurt Jooss.” *****
Like many choreographers Pite realized she wanted to return to the work to explore it deeper, and to further develop and enrich its characters. The piece is an apt image of imagination, absurdity and ritual. With the rank-and-file marching bands in contrast to a disorganized parade of clowns, Pite emphasizes the tension between instinct and intellect, rational and irrational, unconsciousness and consciousness.
The main company NDT 1 consists of phenomenal dancers from all over the world, varying in age between 24 and 41 years. Each one of them excelling in their solo qualities. The dancers of NDT are renowned for their versatility, astonishing technique and virtuosic expression. The company contributes to various art forms along with choreography by involving visual art, music composition, and innovative light and set designs, all the while developing new talent. At NDT’s home base, all this comes together daily in surroundings that are regarded as a unique worldwide breeding ground, constantly moving ahead to let the future of dance take shape.
