Michaela DePrince


Soloist Michaela DePrince is from Sierra Leone. She grew up in the United States. Together with her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, she wrote the book Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina.

Michaela studied dance at The Rock School in Philadelphia and the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York. In 2012 she joined the Dance Theatre of Harlem as a very young dancer. A year later, she came to the Netherlands, where she was hired by the Dutch National Ballet's then recently established Junior Company. In 2014, she joined the Dutch National Ballet. In a short time she went through various ranks and was appointed soloist in 2016.

In 2019 Michaela starred in the animation and ballet film Coppelia, which will be shown in cinemas at the end of 2020. Furthermore, Michaela is ambassador of War Child and is also involved in other ways to offer war children a future.
