Repetities Junior Company + ISH voor GRIMM (2018)

In these days of selfies and the ever-present craving for a smooth and successful life, Oscar Wilde’s 1891 book 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' is chillingly topical. Choreographers Ernst Meisner and Marco Gerris drew on Wilde’s novel as the basis for their third joint choreography. Be amazed by this invigorating, modern dance performance for all ages that brings together ballet and hiphop.

Dutch National Ballet + Junior Company + ISH

Dorian is a collaboration between Dutch National Ballet, the Junior Company and cross over dance company ISH dance collective. The companies have enjoyed previous successes with Narnia and GRIMM, which Ernst Meisner (Junior Company) and Marco Gerris (ISH) based on C.S. Lewis’ fantasy book series 'The Chronicles of Narnia' and the classic fairy tales by the brothers Grimm. This time the two choreographers have chosen a source that will appeal not only to youthful audiences, but dance-lovers of all ages.

Adoration and extravagance
The makers depict Dorian as a successful young model who, in search of his own identity, loses his innocence and eventually himself. Because what happens to you when your beauty seems to blind everyone around you? When, as a young person, you suddenly attract adoration and applause? And your world becomes one of parties and extravagance? How do you know which voices to listen to? How to stay yourself, and be genuine? Can a person resist the temptations that go with being famous?
New, live music
The young Dutch composer Joey Roukens, who in the past worked with Meisner for the ballet In Transit, and composed several works for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, has written a new full-length score for Dorian. The Ballet Orchestra, led by Marzio Conti, performs it live.

'Gerris and Meisner come admirably far in their ambition to combine classical dance language and street language in an appealing way.'

Thu 20 Feb De Telegraaf about Narnia

'It. Is. A-ma-zing. Narnia is a fairy tale ballet, in which the Junior Company has joined forces with the dancers of ISH. Ballet mixed with hip-hop. And really everything falls into place in this story, in which children end up in a fairytale world (...) this you should not deny your (grand)children.'

Dutch Ballet Orchestra
Since its foundation in 1965, the orchestra has been the proud orchestral partner of Dutch National Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater. This way of working is unique in the Netherlands. Dutch Ballet Orchestra, with Matthew Rowe as its principal conductor, consists of a permanent core of 45 musicians, supported where necessary by highly qualified guest players. This gives the orchestra a unique character: flexible, dynamic and of high quality. Dutch Ballet Orchestra combines music and dance to provide an enchanting experience: from classical ballet to modern dance, from music education to talent development. An optimal synthesis between music and dance is the orchestra’s mission.

The orchestra masters a rich repertoire, which includes the crown jewels of ballet history such as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. This repertoire is always complemented by the best works of contemporary composers, selected by the leading choreographers of today. The orchestra reaches dance lovers and enthusiasts of ballet music as well as children and adolescents. The educational projects of the orchestra have won several (international) awards, including the Young Audiences Music Award in 2016 for Creatures, a collaboration with dance company ISH.
