Fate strikes mercilessly hard in La forza del destino. A family conflict with a fatal ending arises against the backdrop of war.

In short

The tragic heroine of La forza del destino already faces an impossible feat in the first act: the choice between her true love Don Alvaro and the memory of her father, who was accidentally killed by Alvaro.

The timeline of the story is not linear, which makes the work difficult to stage. Forza has had a big influence as the precursor of patchwork drama, and has been very important in the development of Russian opera, in particular.

Director Christof Loy sees the theatrical difficulty of La forza del destino as a positive challenge. Previous challenges he has successfully taken on include Verdi's Les vêpres siciliennes and Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, which are also personal dramas with a political background.

Conductor Michele Mariotti is guesting for the first time with Dutch National Opera. He will be conducting the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chorus of Dutch National Opera, alongside such eminent soloists as Eva-Maria Westbroek (Donna Leonora), Franco Vasallo (Don Carlos di Vargas), Aleksandr Antonenko (Don Alvaro) and Veronica Simeoni (Preziosilla).

Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek is a popular guest with Dutch National Opera. Her sensational debut as Katerina Izmajlova in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (2006) was followed by Minnie in La fanciulla del West (2009), the Anniversary Concert (2016, excerpts from Les Troyens and Salomé) and the title role in Manon Lescaut. In the spring of 2017, she will be singing Marie in Wozzeck. Her intense interpretations are praised for their perfect balance between the emotional and the intellectual.
