AUS LICHT (2019) – HIGHLIGHTS FROM STOCKHAUSEN’S MASTERPIECE

Dutch National Opera, Holland Festival, Royal Conservatoire The Hague and the Stockhausen Foundation for Music jointly present aus LICHT at the 2019 Holland Festival: a selection from the seven-opera cycle LICHT by Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928—2007) in a performance spread over three consecutive days: in total, 16 hours of live music and 5 hours of electronic music.

In co-operation with the wardens of Stockhausen’s legacy, a concept has been developed which broadly presents the music from LICHT in a mise-en-space by Pierre Audi. aus LICHT promises to be an experience for the audience; drawing on all seven operas in the cycle, it represents the full palette of Stockhausen’s expressive means. aus Licht is a unique opportunity to take a comprehensive three-day journey through Stockhausen’s musical universe. It presents Stockhausen buffs with the first-ever chance to hear this music in an integrated form. For many others it offers the perfect occasion to get acquainted with an unprecedented highlight of recent music history.

Previews
In the run-up to aus LICHT 2019, various previews will be presented during the Opera Forward Festival, a project of Dutch National Opera and Holland Festivals (2017 and 2018).

aus LICHT master’s programme
In 2017 the Royal Conservatory in The Hague will initiate a two-year master’s programme, led by Kathinka Pasveer, to train musicians in performance techniques used in Stockhausen’s aus LICHT.
“From alien sound explosions to choirs and ensembles arranged throughout the hall. From a monstrous orchestra to sublime duets and heart-wrenching solos. All-encompassing electronic sounds will be projected using the newest techniques. And alongside the mighty clamor of helicopter rotors combined with the tones of a string quartet comes the pure euphony of seven boy sopranos,” according to Renee Jonker, one of the master programme’s creators.

Pierre Audi, Artistic Director of Dutch National Opera:
"The LICHT cycle of Karlheinz Stockhausen is the most radical and utopic opera project in the history of music - theatre. Dutch National Opera is proud to be a major producer in creating the first ever project surveying substantial parts of all seven operas. This unique immersive experience entitled appropriately 'aus LICHT' will be staged in the magical setting of the Gashouder enabling us for the first time to witness another dimension of opera as a life changing experience. Attending Stockhausen concerts at the age of 12 sealed my passion for contemporary music and opera. I am thrilled to serve this amazing project as the culmination of thirty years of work in Amsterdam and a climax to the many ground breaking projects DNO has been able coproduce especially with the Holland Festival since it was founded."

Ruth MacKenzie, Artistic Director of the Holland Festival:
“I am proud that the Holland Festival, which made history with Stockhausen will once again make history with the world premiere of aus LICHT in 2019. Since I had the honour and thrill of working on the world premiere of MITTWOCH aus LICHT for the London 2012 Festival, I have been longing to do an even more ambitious project, and aus LICHT gives me the perfect chance to work again with the Stockhausen - Stiftung für Musik, with the perfect partners of DNO and the Hague Conservatoire. This is the chance of a lifetime to experience the epic genius of Stockhausen and to create a legacy of young Stockhausen experts for decades to come.”
