SOME OF THE REVIEWS

Mark Swed in de Los Angeles Times

‘Louis Andriessen is the great argumentative opera composer of our day .. He is, moreover, a master of operatic argument.’

‘Theatre of the World, the fifth and most querulous opera .. is always extraordinary’

‘Musically, it is brilliant and deep’

‘A musically rich score and a sensational performance’

‘Décor and video by the Quay Brothers add further grotesqueries, the avant-garde American animators framing video of inconsequential monochrome stop-motion animatronics with gigantic red brushstrokes.’

Zachary Woolfe in New York Times

‘Dizzying, perplexing new opera’

‘Theater of the World” is a lavish, bawdy, enthusiastically semi-coherent fantasia on early modern culture, but Mr. Andriessen has grown ever more expert as a technician.’

‘Sung beautifully by Cristina Zavalloni, she gets the pure, high lines that have long been a fixture of Mr. Andriessen’s medieval-flavored writing for voices.’

‘Florence von Gerkan’s costumes are wonderful, stark, bizarre — cutting, like the music, a wide swath through the Renaissance, geometric abstraction and contemporary references like the Batman symbol.’

Anne van Driel  in the Volkskrant

‘Fiendish beauty’ ‘A grotesque and rebellious masterpiece’

‘Louis Andriessen is regarded as the greatest Dutch composer since Sweelinck, also in the rest of the world, where Andriessen is held in high esteem’.
