Nando Schellen has passed away

On Easter Monday, Nando Schellen passed away in Phoenix (Arizona). Schellen was the managing director of The Netherlands Opera from 1969 to 1986. He played a major role in the development of Dutch National Opera and in the establishment of our theatre. On leaving Dutch National Opera, he worked as an opera director, among other things. From 2000, he was Director of Opera Theater at the Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. He left the university last year, giving farewell performances of his production of Le nozze di Figaro over the Easter weekend. He was very interested in the development of young singers, for which purpose he founded the special festival ‘Flagstaff in Fidenza’ in Italy. Last autumn, on his last visit to the Netherlands, he was the special guest at the DNO Gala on 6 November. There is an extensive interview with him in Odeon 99.
